Education is the development of the abilities of the mind, an act of imparting knowledge and giving rise to critical thinking. Education aims at the development of understanding, rationality, kindness, and honesty. Education is an essential human virtue, necessity of society, basis of good life and sign of freedom. It is important for the amalgamation of different entities. Expressing his views on education Swami Vivekananda remarked: “Education is the manifestation of perfection already present in a man”. Education makes better citizens, develops confidence, ensures bright future and most importantly shapes the characters of the individuals. The father of the Nation says, “By education, I mean an all-round drawing of the best in child and man in body, mind and spirit”.

Education is the right of every Indian citizen, regardless of gender or social and economic status. It has a vital role in the upliftment of underprivileged, marginalized and vulnerable sections and results in a more equitable and just society. In the words of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad “We must not for a moment forget, it is a birth right of every individual to receive at least the basic education without which he cannot fully discharge his duties as citizen”.

Need for Education

Education is a prerequisite for a developed and well-groomed society. It enlightens the mind and gives new directions to the lives of the individuals. Education is a key vehicle for fostering development and greater prosperity. It is the key to success in each and every aspect of one’s life. It helps to feed the soul and mind of an individual with morals and values which is important for the formation of a civilized society. Education is not only important to better understand and explore one’s own purpose of life but it also inculcates the ability of tolerance towards other beliefs and ideas. It helps discern the right from wrong. Education is the most powerful weapon by which one can bring changes in the society and the world. Education plays a crucial role in social, political, economic and cultural development of a society. It paves the way for the holistic development of the individual, society and the nation. National unity and emotional integration are two factors that are important when addressing the success and stability of any country. Education has an important role to play in the national integration.

Value based Education

Education should not only be learning concept. Education should be based on the values of morality, integrity and humility. Value based education is very important to have good citizens and excellent human beings. “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence” - Rabindranath Tagore. Value-based education only can transform a society. Education without values can produce degree holders and professionals but it cannot produce enlightened human beings. Imparting value based education cultivates good behavior based on patience and perseverance. The aim of value based education should be to equip the child with the abilities to become creative, imaginative and visionary who takes pride in sharing, caring and assisting others to grow up. “Ultimately, education in its real sense is the pursuit of truth.
